Description
Hakaluki Haor is the largest Haor in Bangladesh. It is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in Asia. Its area is 18,115 hectares, out of which the area of Bill alone is 4,400 hectares. It is spread across Baralekha (40%), Kulaura (30%), Fenchuganj (15%), Golapganj (10%) and Biyanibazar (5%) in Sylhet district in Moulvibazar district.
Geologically, it is situated on the foothills of the Meghalaya Hills of India to the north and the Tripura Hills to the east. Because of the geological features of the high mountains upstream, Hakaluki Haore experiences flash floods almost every year. This hoor has 80-90 small, large and medium bills. In winter, the whole area becomes busy with migratory birds around these bills. November to February is the ideal time to visit Hakaluki Hao to see visiting birds. At this time, the surroundings of Haor are buzzing with the noise of guest birds.
